Last Run Coming Up
28 Years in traffic

It was a bright and sunny say last week as the Decatur lines bus covered the Jasper street run with Raymond Burns as the driver.

Riders were greeted with a pleasant hello and long time riders were greeted by name. This ended today, however, when Burns retired.

As he drove the bus today he recalled the days in his 281/2-year-span that the "buses were as crowded on the last run at night as the first run in the morning."

In those days, "I used to tell them to act like thewy were in church and go sit in the back," he said this always brought a laugh as well as results.

Burns said the riders gradually decreased as cars got cheaper and could be purchased without a large down payment.

Eliminating the night runs was another reason for the decline, Burns said. Persons who ride the bus in the morning, found found themselves without a way home at night., so they began driving to and from work.

Television is also to blame, Burns said. Youngsters who used to ride the bus to the movies, now stay home and watch television.

As for the young people Burns commented:" as a rule they are just kids" and you can't put an old head on a young kid's shoulder."

The yoiunger ones of elementry school age tend to just sit and giggle, while high schoolstudents vary from those who like to cut up and those who don't bother anything. Some thank him very politely for change.

Burns who was 65 on Oct1 plans to rest after his years of driving eight hours a day six days a week , and go fishing and work around the house.

The Burns', live at 1474 E. Logan street has a daughter, Mrs. John Parker of 2577 S. 34th. Place, whose two children also promise to be frequent visited.

His retirement plans "to enjoy myself in general" were apparent as his good-by to one of the riders ended with "get those horseshoes ready."
