Mack was born to Rev Sam and Alice (Cavins) Wilcoxon in Arkansas. He attended Shafter High School, Bakersfield Junior College and San Jose State and obtained his secondary teaching credential in 1952. He earned his masters degree in mathematics in1960. He taught mathmatics for 25 years in Porterville High School and Porterville Junior College. He served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954. He married the "love of his life", LaVerne Blakely in 1952. They had no children. Mack was known for his beautiful, deep, resonate bass voice.
