James was a long time employee of the Denver Tramway Company. Starting in 1890 as a 15 year old office boy to Tramway President, Rodney Curtis, Jim rose quickly through the ranks, working in the Auditors division, then in 1900 becoming the Transportation Superintendent of the East Division. He later transferred to the same position in the North Division. In 1915, Jim left the Tramway briefly to run the Crown Hill Association Rail Line, but quickly returned to the Denver Tramway Company as it's Superintendant of Transportation, holding that post until July, 1948. Jim then served the Tramway in an advisory capacity until a major heart attack reduced his duties in May, 1950. In his career, Jim also served terms as President of many service organizations such as Lion's Club, Denver Masons, Midwest Transit Association and The President's Round Table.
