Luther C. Head, 89, of La Crosse passed away Friday, April 15, 2011 at his home. He was born in Altus, Oklahoma on September 7, 1921 to William and Georgia (Churchwell) Head.
At age sixteen, Luther joined the CCC in Ardmore, Oklahoma. On September 5, 1940, he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he was assigned to the 2nd Indian head Division and stationed in San Antonio, Texas. He was sent to Camp McCoy in November 1942 and deployed to Europe in October 1943, where he fought in the Battle of the Bulge, landing on Omaha Beach, Normandy, France D-Day +1. In his service to our country he was awarded two purple hearts and two bronze stars. He was honorable discharged on September 7, 1945.
On October 4, 1945 he was united in marriage to the former MaryAnn Peterson in La Crosse. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.
For many years Luther was a mechanic, working for Dahl Ford among others until he opened his own Shell station at the corners of La Crosse Street and Losey Boulevard, which he operated until 1972. He then worked at Skemp Clinic until his retirement in 1982.
Luther was a member of the First Church of Christ and volunteered thousands of hours at St. Francis Medical Center, Lutheran Hospital, and the American Red Cross.
Luther is survived by his wife, MaryAnn; three daughters, Donna Head and Joann Schoeder both of La Crosse, and Carol (Kerry) Pribbenow of Lodi, WI; eight grandchildren, Chandler (Victoria) Head, Kathryn (Michael) McCormack both of Salt Lake City, UT, Jason Schoeder of Baraboo, Jennifer, Danielle, and Tyler Pribbenow of Lodi, WI, and Cody and Morgan Weber of Lodi, WI; one great grandson; and one sister-in-law.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Billy Head; one sister, one brother, eight brothers-in-law; and eight sisters-in-law.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at First Church of Christ, 724 Cass Street, La Crosse. The Reverend Chuck Robinson will officiate and entombment with military honors will be in Woodlawn Mausoleum. Family and friends may call at Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 1425 Jackson Street on Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. and again at the church on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service.

I will always remember you as Joann's Dad, who owned the gas station on the corner of La Crosse St. and Losey Blvd. R.I.P., Mr. Head.
