Richard "Dick" Joseph Coonan died after his car pulled out into the path of another car on W. Capitol Drive in Brookfield. He died instantly. Coonan was 82. He was the son of Martin Leland and Loretta Elizabeth (McCarty) Coonan. He was born and raised in Emmetsburg, Iowa.
He began college at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, but enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942. Coonan served with the military police, including in Italy and Africa.
He came to Milwaukee as a student at Marquette University, graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering. One of his brothers introduced him to the former Loretta Foley. The couple married in 1948. They raised their family in Wauwatosa, later moving to Brookfield.
After a first career in the aluminum industry, Dick retired, only to find another career in recruiting with Pinkerton. Dick came up with the idea for a professional group, the Recruiters Network, which included dozens of area employers.
In 2000, Dick retired again, this time taking a recruiting job with Executive Placement & Career Services, he retired from that position on April 22.
In addition to his wife and daughter, survivors include sons James, Robert and Thomas; brothers Donald and Gerald; and grandchildren. A son, Donald, died earlier.
