Edwin James Briggs, was born in West Rutland, Vermont in February of 1857. He was the second son of Edgar S. Briggs (b.1830 in Chittendon Vermont) and Mary Jane (Haskins) Briggs (b.1838 in West Rutland Vermont).

On November 26, 1891 at age 34y, he married Minnie Susan Baker (b.1873 in Hartford New York) in West Rutland Vermont with Rev. H.T. Barnard officiating. Married for almost 8 years, together while living and working on their farm in Pittsford Vermont they raised 4 children: Edwin J. Briggs b.1892, Egbert R. Briggs b.1894, Jane M. Briggs b.1896, and, Harold E. Briggs b.1899.

Edwin James Briggs died on February 2, 1899 at age 41y and 11m of pneumonia resulting from complications from an accident while working on his farm. Buried at the Evergreen Cemetery, in the town of Pittsford, Rutland County, VT, in a family plot with his eldest son Edwin J. Briggs and his wife Ruth Marie (Burgess) Briggs, 4 infant children, 2 grandsons, John Homer Briggs, Robert Clyde Briggs, an infant granddaughter, and a great, great grandson David Paul Briggs; and his great granddaughter Joan Marie Briggs; and is buried w/o Minnie Briggs who is buried in Bristol, Hartford County, CT with her last husband.
