James Henry Carter was born 1826 in White County, Tn. James moved to Wayne County, Ky in 1848 when he married Elenor (Nellie) Upchurch. James and Nellie owned farms in Ky and Tn before the civil war. The family cut timber sent on the Cumberland River to Nashville. The civil war ended trade. James became a Circuit Rider Minister after the war. Nellie died in February 1870 during the childbirth. James and Nellie had ten children. Shrewsberry, John, America, Sarah, Frank, Edmond, James, Elen.
James remarried June 10, 1870 to Sarah Catherine Dawson in Clinton County, Ky. James continued preaching. He retired as Pulpit Minister of Rose of Sharon Church in Cumberland County, Ky. James and Sarah had six children. Isaac, Rutha, Haywood, Wilburn, Mary, Gertie. They resided in Hegira/Bow area of Cumberland County.
