Elmo D. McMillen, 74, one of Grant County's prominent and respected ranchers, passed away Saturday afternoon at the family home, 609 Black St., following a long illness. His death recalled the founding of the extensive ranch properties in 1876, by his father, Daniel C. McMillen, first at Mule Creek and later the AT Cross Ranch in the Mangus Valley and the addition of the original homestead. After the death of the elder McMillen, his ranch holding passed to his two sons, Elmo and John T. McMillen, and have been continuously and successfully operated by succeeding generations of the McMillen family for 82 years, setting a record in ranching and livestock raising in Southwest New Mexico. Mr. McMillen was born in Silver City Aug. 17, 1884, the son of Daniel C. McMillen and Mary Jane Howie McMillen. Surviving are his wife, Mabel Harris McMillen; two children, Elmo D. McMillen, Jr., and Mary McMillen Salars; a brother, John T. McMillen; three grandchildren, Dan McMillen, Eva McMillen Salars and Darlene McMillen, and two cousins, J.J. McMillen, Clifton Ariz. and Herman Uhli, Silver City. During his lifetime as a rancher, Mr. McMillen was one of the charter members of the New Mexico Cattle Growers Assn. and served as a member of its Executive Board. He held life memberships in Silver City Lodge No 8, A. F. & A. M.; and the Elks Lodge. He also was a member of Baullut- Abayad Temple of the Shrine, Albuquerque, and Eastern Star Chapter No. 3. Funeral services were held at the Cox Mortuary Chapel Tuesday at 2 p.m., the Silver City Masonic Lodge conducting ritualistic rites. Burial took place in the family plot in the Masonic cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Marvin Glenn, Bartley B. McDonald, Sherwood Culberson, Frank Parrish, Maurice Conner, Randolph Franks. Honorary pallbearers were William McKinney, Frank Light, Leo Schiff, Albert Wilmeth, W.A. Welsh, Robert Royall, Robert Jackson Sr. and Dr. N.D. Frazin.
