Nell was the youngest child of Maria "Mary" Ryan and Henry W. Harris, who were pioneers of Livingston County, MI. Henry Harris was a personal friend of Lewis Cass. Nell married Dr. Charles W. Gardner on 4-9-1880. They had one daughter Ellen E. "Nellie" Gardner on 2-19-1881. Nell died the next day. Nellie was raised by her Aunt Maggie and Uncle Jim (Margaret Gardner and Damascus Monks).
