Martha Sue Smith Blair - died peacefully in her sleep early this past Tuesday morning. She was 74, just shy of her 75th birthday on June 5th. My sister Margaret, who has been the primary caregiver for several months, went in to check on her and found that she had passed. My Mom had been a dementia patient, cared for at home by family & caregivers, for over 10 years. She was made of tough stuff, but in the last few months her general health had declined, and in the last few weeks this decline became rapid.
My Dad is in a skilled nursing facility for a couple of weeks of physical therapy, recovering from a short hospital stay. He is otherwise healthy, and will be coming home soon.
Throughout the last 10 years Mom was generally healthy, almost always happy, and recognized and interacted with close family. Her speech centers were the first and hardest hit, but even until the last few months she would respond to words and conversations, and smile when we told her we loved her. As recently as Christmas she would laugh at bad jokes or ridiculous statements we would tell her. We will miss her dearly, but her death was not entirely unexpected, and her passing may have prevented a measure of suffering.
I love you, Mom. Looking (far) forward to seeing you again someday, where we can talk & sing for all eternity.
