In an April 9, 1953 issue of the 'Tri-County News, Spruce Pine' newspaper is an article entitled "Joe Honeycutt Last Of Pioneer Family".
By Harvey J. Miller
The death of Nathan Honeycutt, 84, on January 25, left only one surviving child of the late Mr. and Mrs. Mosey Honeycutt, a Pigeon Roost pioneer family. The only survivor is the Rev. Joe Honeycutt, 93, who probably is the oldest retired minister of the Freewill Baptist church, having been ordained minister of that denomination for almost 65 years.
Honeycutt moved with his family in the year 1901, to Dial, Georgia from Pigeon Roost, where he was born and reared. He lived in Georgia until 1940 when his wife, Marier "Mariah" Arrowood Honeycutt died, who was also a native of Pigeon Roost.
Cleveland Tennessee has been his home for 12 years, staying with his daughter , Mrs. Ellen Wright.
Rev. Honeycutt visited Pigeon Roost six years ago and stayed with relatives.
A recent communication stated that he was in good health, but almost blind.
Friends recalled recently that when he was a young minister here, he was also a carpenter and built several log houses and constructed caskets when they were needed.
He continued to build caskets when he moved to Georgia and did not charge for his services. He is reported to be the first minister to take the Free Will Baptist doctrine to several localities in Georgia and new churches were organized.
