Walter enlisted in Nebraska during WWI. He served in the Machine Gun Company, 125th Infantry, 32nd Division. His date of service began on June 2, 1917. He received an honorable discharge on March 10, 1919.

Walter married Opal Hetherington in February, 1920, at Grand Island, Hall County, Nebraska. They had two children during their marriage, one son, Burl Albert, and one daughter, Lela Iona. Walter was working as a lineman at the time of their marriage.
