William Albert (Bill) Zach was born in LaPorte County, Indiana on April 14, 1921, the son of Herbert and Helen Marschke Zach. He was their only child. He married Joan Kritz on May 31, 1945 at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Michigan City, Indiana.
Bill graduated from Isaac C. Elston High School in Michigan City, Class of 1939. After graduation, he was employed by the Michiana Products Company during WWII. Desiring a college education, he was encouraged by his wife, Joan, to go to Purdue for a mechanical engineering degree. Thus, the Zach's purchased the B-K and the Toot 'n Tell, Crawfordsville, in order to have money for Bill's education and to be close to Purdue. They organized the business so that Bill had time to study and still help out with the managerial duties of owning two drive-ins. On the couple's fourteenth wedding anniversary, at age 38, Bill received that degree, but never worked as an engineer, instead opting to expand the restaurant interests. In 1961, the Toot 'n Tell was torn down and a new A&W was built. The couple ran this drive-in until 1966 when the lot across from the mall was purchased and the new A&W built and opened in 1967. Bill served as President of the A&W Operators Association about this time and the whole Zach family worked at the restaurant. After much expansion, thousands of Coney dogs later, and 33 years in the restaurant business, Bill and Joan enjoyed a long retirement. Bill and Joan remained active in St. Bernard's Catholic Church for many years, Bill serving as a basketball coach at the old St. Bernard's school. Bill was also active in Lion's Club, being a Past President. Bill was an avid fisherman, hunter and golfer, he enjoyed playing bid euchre with his family and bridge with his friends.
Surving are his wife(Joan), son James (wife Karen) of Waveland; daughter Becky Hurt(husband Brad) of Crawfordsville; and daughter Barb(husband Terry) Jackson of Lafayette; four grandchildren, Aaron and Jacob Hurt of Crawfordsville; Jay Zach of Frankton and Suzie Baldwin of Waveland, 10 great grandchildren and cousins. Bill's parents and one half sister, Marjorie Keltz, are deceased.
Calling will be 4-8 pm Monday in Hunt and Sons Funeral Home. Funeral services are scheduled 10 am Tuesday in Saint Bernard's Catholic Church with Father Thomas Crotty officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Although Bill and I got a bad start, we grew to love each other dearly. This rose reminds me of one he grew - he and JoAn were always puttering in their beautiful gardens. With this rose, I remember all the great times we had yard selling; card playing;...(Read more)|
