Barney was the grandson of William and Mary Brown from South Carolina and son of Elizabeth from Georgia. He first married Louisa Mary McDermot or McDermon from Georgia in about 1863. They had three boys: Benjamin B., William and Andrew J. He next married a Francis according to census records. No other information on her is known. Barney lastly married Louisa Jane Canteberry April 10, 1884.
Barney fought in the Civil War in Holcombe Legion, Company D for the Confederate States of America. He was captured in the Battle of Fisher's Hill in Virginia and held at Point Lookout, Maryland until the end of the war. He received a pension from the state of Louisiana for his service.
