Jonas was born in Virginia. His father died when he was young. He fought as a Confederate soldier in the Civil War. After the war, he moved to Indiana. He married Susan Paulina Lutz (some say Paulina Susan) Feb 15, 1872. They moved to Poweshiek in 1878. He was a farmer.
