"Elmer C. Applegate 1920-2008
Elmer C. Applegate of Willcox, after a long-fought battle with Alzheimer's, died June 28, 2008 in Safford at the age of 87. Elmer was born in Hopkins, Mo. on Aug. 19, 1920 to Thomas Fay Applegate and Beulah Bagby Applegate.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during WW II in Central Burma-India. Elmer was awarded two bronze stars during that campaign. He married Nelda Organ on Oct. 12, 1941 and together they traveled between Kansas City and Arizona while Elmer worked for TWA as an airline mechanic until his retirement in 1985, when they settled in Colorado. In 2000 they moved to Willcox. He loved the outdoors and had a great passion for horses.
Survivors include his sons Jim and Ron (Jackie), both of Willcox; grandsons Steve, Al and Will; and a great grandson Brandon. Also surviving is his brother Thomas Applegate of Columbia, Mo.; and his sisters Eleanor Dietmann of Daytona, Fla. and Ann Koening of Oswego, Kan. Elmer was preceded in death by his loving wife Nelda on May 3, 2008, and his parents.
Funeral Services were at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 8, at Westlawn Chapel. Burial followed in Sunset Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Assoc., 225 N. Michigan Ave, 17th Floor, Chicago, IL 60601-7633.
