Cornelius Carter was 25, and living in Pella, Marion Co., Iowa, when he enlisted as a Private in Co. F of the 4th Iowa Cavalry on Oct 17, 1861. He was mustered into federal service on Nov 23, 1861. He later mustered out of the service on Dec 4, 1864, in Memphis when the term of his enlistment had expired.
During the term of his service, Carter was promoted to 7th Corporal on Oct 1, 1862; to 4th Corporal on March 1, 1863; to 3rd Corporal (Musician) on Jan 1, 1864; and finally to 2nd Corporal on May 1, 1864.
Carter had been wounded at least once while in the service by a saber cut to his face. He was also taken prisoner once on June 22, 1863, at Big Black River, MS, and returned to service on March 9, 1864.
Carter applied for his pension on April 24, 1865. His application is #66573, and his certificate #64018.
