The photo on the right is of Emma and her sister, Carrie. Carrie is on the Left, and Emma is on the Right. They were two of the three children born to Charles Marion Burkhart (1853-1915) and Mary Ellen (Morgan) Burkhart (1856-1948). Edith was born in 1877 and died before 1910. Pleassa Caroline, known as "Carrie" was born on Dec 7, 1878 in Polk County and Emma Olive, known as "Olive" was born on Nov 25, 1880 in Albany, Linn County, Oregon. The girls attended school, as their parents agreed that education was important to their children regardless of gender. Edith died prior to 1910, as her mother stated in the 1910 census that she had had 3 children but only 2 were living. Carrie went on to marry James Edwin Foster on Jan 2, 1901, and three children were borne of their union. Emma did not ever marry, always living at home. The family had lived in Monmouth, Polk County, in a new dwelling, when the 1880 census was taken in June, 1880. They had relocated to West Albany by 1900, however, and were living near Emma's uncle, John David Burkhart, and his wife, Sylonia, when the census was taken on June 11th, 1900. Her father was still farming, as was her mother. Carrie and Olive were at home in 1900, but Carrie married in 1901 and then it was just Olive and her parents on the family homestead. Ivan Tennant, (b.1876, West VA.) came to Oregon wanting a place of his own to farm, but he arrived around 1914, after most of the land was gone. Property values had climbed and he found he only could be hired on as a farm laborer for the Burkhart family and try to save what earnings he could. Then Charles Marion Burkhart died suddenly on Dec 9th, 1915 from a brain tumor. He had been having terrible headaches, so the family had known he was ill. Now Mary Ellen Burkhart found herself to be a widow with no desire to ever remarry. She buried her beloved husband and tried to on. Some time between 1915 and 1920, she made an agreement with Ivan to sell the farm to him provided she and Olive be allowed to remain there as long as they lived, a "Life Estate", which Ivan readily agreed to. It was understood that Olive and her mother would be lodgers and care for the house, including cooking, cleaning, canning, etc. The 1920 Census, taken in early Apr 1920, shows Ivan Tennant as being a farmer, now, and Olive and her mother as lodgers. Their neighborhood had been renamed from West Albany to "Sunrise". [The Sunrise district was SW of Albany & the Albany-Junction City Hwy.99E, & E. of Hwy.99W. It was East of Corvallis & the Willamette River, North of Hwy. 34 (Corvallis-Lebanon Hwy.), West of Hwy.99E, and S. of Albany.] Olive had lived there all of her life, since 1880, and it was the only home she had ever known. Mary Ellen had also lived there since about that date and didn't want to relocate at this time in her life. They continued to live in their family home while Ivan farmed the land which produced crops that supported them all until his demise on Apr 25,1942 at the age of 65. As he had no heirs, the farm reverted back to Mary Ellen, who had him buried in the area of Riverside Cemetery, Albany, Linn County, where her own dear husband had been laid to rest some 27 years ago. Mary Ellen passed away at the age of 92 yrs., while ill with bronchial pneumonia on Jun 7, 1948. She was buried next to her loving husband at Riverside Cemetery in Albany. Emma Olive Burkhart outlived her sister, Caroline, who had married James Edwin Foster in 1901. Pleassa Caroline Foster died Oct 24, 1952 at the age of 74 yrs. It was Olive who had to notify the coroner. Olive herself passed from this life on Dec 30th, 1960. She was laid to rest with her parents and near by Ivan Tennant who had been a steward of their land after the passing of her father all too early in her life. May they all Rest in Peace in Paradise.

Rest In Peace, dear Emma, my 2nd Cousin. You cared for your mother and were the housekeeper for the new owner of the farm after your father passed, staying there as lodgers on a life estate. You were a good daughter. Rest in Peace, Cousin.
