Word has been received of the death of Edgar E. Barr, 67, Lincoln, Mass., a Greencastle native and pioneer in thin film development who died Wednesday, Aug. 31, 1983, in Emerson Hospital, Concord, Mass.

He retired in 1981 as president of Barr Associates of Westford, Mass.

Mr. Barr was born in Greencastle on March 20, 1916, son of the late Ira C. and Alta G. Petrie Barr. He attended a one-room schoolhouse eight years and graduated in 1934 from Greencastle High School, where he was senior class president. In 1938, he graduated from Catawba College, where he was president of the Student Senate.

He taught in the physics department of American University in Beirut until 1941, when he entered graduate school at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and taught mathematics in Cambridge, Mass.

In the early 1940's, he joined Polaroid Corp., where he helped develop this film. He headed the thin film laboratory at Baird Atomic from 1947 to 1961, then founded Thin Film Products of Cambridge.

In 1967, he merged the company with Infrared Industries of Waltham, Mass., and headed its research and development program. In 1971, he founded Barr Associates Inc. of Concord, Mass., where he further developed the use of optical interference filters in medical instrumentation and the aerospace industry.

Mr. Barr was a member of First Parish in Lincoln, where he taught fourth grade church school and was a member of the pastoring committee. He also was active in Council of the Aging and other community affairs.

His first wife, Olive G. Haege Barr, died in 1981.

Surviving are his second wife, Patricia MacArthur Barr; daughter, Carol of Stratford, Vt.; son, Kenneth F. of Acton, Mass.; stepchildren Janice C. Kavanagh, Brian P. MacArthur; brother, Harold of Smithsburg, Md.; two sisters, Martha Moore of Waynesboro and Ethel Fodor of Trenton, N.J.; and two stepgranddaughters.

Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery, Lincoln, Mass.
