Son of Obediah Bates (1810-1879,Mt Ida Cemetery,Troy,NY) & Catherine Maria Folyard (1824-1892). Brother of Eliza Bates, Martha Bates, Harriet Bates, George Bates, Emeline Bates, & James Bates. Husband of Elizabeth Lydia A Howard; father of Frederick Steven Bates, Ida E Bates, Hattie Bates, Catherine Bates,Hellen Bates(Find a Grave #55114946), Walter Kenwood Bates, Stephen Bates Jr, & Lydia Bates Jr.
Stephen enlisted during the Civil War in the 125th NY Infantry Regiment Company D for 3 yrs in 1862 in Troy,NY. He was just 19 years old. 15 Sept 1862 he was taken as a POW at Harpers Ferry,VA; paroled and sent to Chicago. The winter quarters were Centerville, VA attached to Gen. Hay's Brigade. In the Spring of 1863 Stephen was promoted to Full Sergeant. By June of 1863 on way to GETTYSBURG. Engaged in Battle of Gettysburg 1-3 July 1863. 15 Jan 1864 promoted to Full 1st Sergeant, age 20. 11 May 1864 promoted to Full Private. 12 May 1864 Battle of Spotsylvania where he was wounded in the thigh (leg eventually removed). 5 June 1864 promoted to Full 2nd Lieutenant. On 24 Nov 1864 Stephen married Elizabeth Lydia A Howard in Troy, NY. 9 April 1865 General Lee's surrender at Appomattox,VA. 9 June 1865 in a Troy,NY hospital. His gunshot wound in his thigh & Civil War soldier experience greatly affected his life with stays at Disabled Veterans Homes in Maine & NY during his life. He died in a Veteran's Home. His jobs were Pork packer, porter, clerk.
