Harry moved with his family to Limestone, Greene County, Tennessee when he was very young. He enlisted in the United States Army from Washington County, Tennessee at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia on 21 January 1942.

Harry was assigned to Company I, 3rd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division. He landed Utah Beach, Normandy, France on 6 June 1944, D-Day.

Harry participated in the Normandy Unit Campaign and was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart medals.

Harry's the son of Clingman Erwin Blankenship and Minnie Belle Hensley.
