Harmon Garland Byrd was married to Mary Louise Davis Byrd.
He was a member of the John Mann United Methodist Church. He served as chairman of the trustee board, and as assistant chairman of the administrative council. Under his direction, the facade of the church was redesigned and erected. He also directed the internal rewiring, refinishing and installation of the new pews.
He served in the armed forces and was stationed in several foreign countries during World War II. He received the Silver Star during his career in the army.
He was an active member of the democratic party. He served as chief poll judge of the Kernstown precinct.
He served six years on the board of directors of Shenandoah Area Agency on Aging. He was commissioned to the Governor's Advisory Board of Aging in 1989 and served in that capacity until ill health caused his resignation. He also served two terms as delegate to the House of Representatives of the Silver -Haired Legislature.
He was a member of the Round Hill Ruritan Club where he served as a three year director. He was also a member of King Hiram Masonic Lodge #53.
