After his father's death in 1949, he moved with his mother and sister to Walla Walla. An avid ham radio operator, he enjoyed talking with fellow operators around the world. During the Vietnam War, he used his radio to run phone patches allowing soldiers in Viet Nam to communicate with their families in the states.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing while his health permitted. He then turned his abilities to home improvement projects. A dog lover, he always had a four-legged companion. The last was his beloved, "Coco."

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans Association through the Herring Funeral Home, 315 W. Alder St., Walla Walla, Wash. 99362.
