Ivan was born and raised at Buck Mountain, and attended grammar school there. He herded turkeys, helped raise all the farm animals and helped with the hay and garden. He grew up being a good hunter, trapper and fisherman as well. Ivan was a good carpenter and built two very unique log houses with the logs vertical instead of the usual horizontal style. He worked on various ranches where he built several barns and tended the livestock. He was an excellent fence builder and enjoyed gardening, both flower and vegetables. He loved music and played the violin for dances in his younger years.
When he retired he bought a home in Fortuna where he and his wife Dorothea lived the remainder of their lives and tended his beautiful gardens.
