Benjamin S. Bowley, known as Sherman Bowley, age 88, of South Bayley-Hazen Rd. in Ryegate, Vt., died on Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in White River Junction, Vt.

He was born in Newbury, Vt., Sept. 19, 1921, the son of William Addison Bowley and Ella Mae (Judd) Bowley.

Sherman served with the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Sherman married Virginia M. Darby on Feb. 21, 1943.

He worked for Walter E. Jock Oil Company in Wells River, Vt., for over 40 years as a burner technician and electrician, retiring in 1988. Sherm had enjoyed time spent with his family, going on cruises, hunting, gardening, and camping. He was known for his whistling while he was working.

He was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Virginia M. Bowley on April 2, 1996; two sisters, Velma Sheltry and Violet Hitchcock; and a brother, Norman Bowley.

Survivors included his daughter, Cheryle and husband Joseph of Wells River, Vt.; a son, Gary Bowley of Wells River; three sisters, Marion Ballou of South Royalton, Vt., May Foligno of New Britain, Conn., and Ruth Caswell of Rutland, Vt.; a brother, Raymond Bowley of Plainville, Conn.; two grandchildren, Jeremy and wife Terri and Corey; two great grandchildren, Jordan and Emily; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
