Sallie Moss Pierce was born in Campbell County, Tennessee. Her father, Clinton Pierce, was born in Campbell County and her mother, Elizabeth Carroll Pierce, was born in neighboring Claiborne County. She was the only child of eight to leave her birthplace. Sallie married James S. Butler in Campbell County on his 23rd birthday, March 29, 1891. About ten years later James, Sallie, their three children and Doctor Butler, James' father, left Tennessee and traveled by covered wagon to Oklahoma. Bertha, their oldest child, remembered walking beside the wagon. She was about 7 years of age. They arrived in Oklahoma in time for the 1900 census. Sally and James settled in Cleveland, Dewey County and Doc Butler settled in Cedar Valley, Blaine County. James and Sally started the process of claiming their homestead of 160 acres in Dewey County in 1899. They had three more children and two more farms during their life together in Oklahoma. Sallie and James celebrated their 55th anniversary a month before his death.
