Services for the driver of the car, Michael ( Mike ) VanWey, 23, Carthage route 3, will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Ulmer Funeral Home here. Burial will be in Paradise Cemetery, north of Carthage.
Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth E. Graveside services for the second victim, Miss Kathy Cornell, 17, Carthage route 4, will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Park Cemetery here under direction of the Ulmer Funeral Home.
Miss Cornell was the daughter of Harry Mack Cornell Jr., Joplin, and Mrs. Shirley Cornell, Carthage route 4. Her father is president of Leggett & Platt, Inc., Carthage.
Surviving, in addition to her parents, are two sisters, Miss Marjorie Sharon Cornell and Mrs. Bryan Alu, both of Boulder, Colo., and her paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Mack Cornell Sr., 1106 Grand Ave.
According to the highway patrol, the two were killed when VanWey lost control of his westbound American-made sports car while attempting to pass another vehicle. The VanWey car skidded off the rain-slick pavement and struck a utility pole, pinning the victims inside. Both were pronounced dead on arrival at McCune Brooks Hospital.
