Leavitt, Bertha (1) (29 May 1930)Star Valley Independent

Our little town experienced another sad occasion in the passing of a loving wife and mother, Mrs Bertha May Leavitt, who died at the Soda Springs hospital May 23. For some time Bertha had been afflicted with sinus trouble and on the advice of our local doctors, she started for Ogden, where surgical and medical skill could be secured.
With her husband, Delbert Leavitt, her mother Mrs D.T. Wood and Mr and Mrs Russell Wilkes of Bedford, she started out and while on the way the pain and distress seemed so intense they were compelled to stop at Soda Springs, where, after a thorough examination, it was pronounced as sinus trouble in a very advanced stage.
She was operated on May 10. The operation seemed at first to be successful, but complications set in which where very discouraging and finally resulted in her death after being at the hospital for two weeks with everything being done that could be done by doctors, nurses, loving relatives and a host of friends, but all to no avail.
Bertha passed away at 12 o'clock Friday May 23, leaving her husband, Delbert Leavitt and four little children, her father and mother, brothers and sisters, and a host of friends to mourn her loss.
Bertha May Wood Leavitt was born at Auburn Sept 3, 1895. and seemed to be a bright star in the family. having a sunny and loving disposition that attracted all who knew her. When twenty years old she married Delbert Leavitt in the Logan Temple. Following this union they were blessed with five little children, one little boy passing to the Great Beyond several years ago. Bertha was doing her part to assist in building up the Kingdom of god, being a Sunday School teacher for 2l years. she was also president of the Primary and took great pleasure in teaching and training little children.
The funeral was held at Auburn Monday, May 26, at 3 p.m. and was attended by a large concourse of people there being more than 300 present. bishop Joseph E. George was in charge. M.K. Hurd of Grover led the singing. The speakers were Ozro Gardner, Charles Moser, her cousin Fred Parish of Blackfoot, Idaho, who recently returned from the Eastern States mission, and Bishop George. The Gardner brothers also sang and played a violin duet, which was very much appreciated.
The casket was covered with beautiful flowers, which were also extended to the table and chairs. The Primary children marched around the casket, each leaving a flower as a token of love and respect for their departed president and Sunday School teacher. Very few if any of the large crowd could refrain from tears while witnessing this part of the services.
Mrs Elona Hillyard read very feelingly many verses handed in by relatives and friends with the beautiful flowers.
Her brother,l Percy Wood, came in from Baker City Oregon, and two carloads of relatives came from Blackfoot, Idaho, among them being the father of Bishop Wood, two brothers and three sisters; also several cars from Lewiston, Utah among them being cousins of Mrs Wood, also Delbert's uncles and aunts, making it one of the largest and sadist funerals ever held in Auburn.
With her husband they had almost completed a nice new home where there is a vacancy now that it seems can never be filled.
