Longtime resident Norman Johnson dies
Victor Norman Johnson died at his home in Auburn, WY Tuesday afternoon, Aug 30.
He was born Oct 11, 1915 in Osmond, WY, the fifth child in a family of 11, two girls and nine boys. When he was seven years old, his family moved to Auburn where he lived for the rest of his life.
He married Gene Walton Nov 19, 1938 at Paris, Bear Lake ID. They have raised four sons and two daughters. They have 23 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
In his early married years he and his friends enjoyed catching wild horses in the desert by Rock Springs. Norman would go to the canyon and get logs out for the sawmill with a team and sleigh. He always took a lot of pride in having a good team of horses. One of the most enjoyable things that Norman did was guiding for Ralph Child for his hunting camp.
Norman was a good barber. His family never had to go to another barber until they left home. He also cut hair for the neighbors and nephews. When Douglas got his barber license, Norm quit cutting hair.
Norm loved music, dancing, and singing. When Lawrence Welk would come on TV, Norma Jean or LaVada would stand on his feet and they would dance around the living room.
Norman and Gene were called to be the stake dance directors and taught the youth dances. They participated in the dance festival at Utah State University in Logan. They also square danced with other couples in the valley and Norm would sometimes call the square dances.
Norman always worked on the church welfare farm and was always there to cut the grain in the fall. Norm, Don Nield, and Clyde Bagley bought and sold calves for the ward.
In August 1965, at the Lincoln County Fair, Norman was run over by a horse and sustained serious leg and head injuries. He spent six weeks in the hospital in Salt Lake. He never fully recovered from this accident. This proved to be many trips to the hospital. He had a number of heart attacks. While working in the field he slipped from the tractor and was run over by both the tractor and disc, causing more injury to his legs and arms. A short time later he slipped on some ice and broke his leg again. He lived with much pain for many years.
His grandsons helped hay and milk for the past 10 summers. They all become very close. He was loved and will be missed everyone.
He is survived by his wife, Gene, sons Dennis, Douglas, Auburn; Terry, Gary, Sandy, UT; daughters, LaVada Southwick, Auburn; Norma Jean Hudson, Sandy UT; brothers, Orson, Ervon, Ross and Dale (Bob) Auburn; sisters; Grace Toland, Montpelier, ID; Elma Pico, West Covina, CA; 23 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
