Roy R. Beyer, age 90, of Holstein, passed away on Thursday, October 21, 2010 at the Char-Mac Assisted Living of Holstein. A funeral service was held on Monday, October 25, 2010 at 10:30 A.M. at the St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church of Holstein with the Rev. Curtis E. Benson officiating. Burial was at the Holstein Cemetery of Holstein with Military Rites conducted by American Legion Dessel-Schmidt Post #225 of Holstein.
Roy Beyer was born at home in Galva Township on January 3, 1920 to Anna Christine (Endrulat) Beyer and William Frederick Beyer. He attended rural school and Galva High School. During World War II he was stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington, and served in the 188th Field Artillery. He married Verdonna Gebers in 1945 and began farming on rented ground. In 1955 he bought a farm north of Holstein where he lived until January 2010, when he moved to Char-Mac Assisted Living. During their marriage and farming career Roy and Verdonna had three children. Verdonna passed away in 1991. In 1997, Roy married Loraine Sellman.
Roy loved his grandchildren and attended their school events. He enjoyed fishing, especially during his trips to Canada. As a young man he loved to hunt with his 22 Marlan rifle, with which he could light a wooden match. He also enjoyed inventing and manufacturing tools for particular jobs, farming and John Deere tractors, playing cards, especially Sheeps Head, and fireworks on the 4th of July. Roy boxed in the Golden Gloves.
Roy was preceded in death by his wife, Verdonna; his parents; his sister, Ethel Bochman; and his brother, Clarence Beyer.
He is survived by his wife, Loraine of Holstein, IA; children, Joann (David) Abbott of Sergeant Bluff, IA, Craig (Patty) Beyer of Holstein, IA, and Donna (Greg) Johnson of Holstein, IA; eight grandchildren, Lori Gill of Sergeant Bluff, IA, Cheri (Scott) Fegenbush of Urbandale, IA, Gina Beyer of Phoenix, AZ, Kristen Beyer of Kansas City, MO, Kelli Beyer of Ames, IA, Dawn (Aaron) Gries of Norwalk, IA, Jennifer (Chris) Horner of Bussey, IA, Adam Johnson and fiancÚ Sarah Stewart of Norwalk, IA; five great grandchildren; step-children, Mike and Bonnie Sellman of Downs, KS, Jennifer and Larry Shipman of Dunlap, IL and Jan Sellman of Salix, IA; step-grandchildren, Mike Sellman, Jr., Anissa and Mike McCunen, Ken Shipman, Tim and Carla Frederich, Scott and Marci Sellman, Jennifer Sellman and 7 step great grandchildren.
