Elizabeth Bennett Boyd
Kosciusko Newspaper 1911
Kosciusko, Mississippi

Sister Boyd was truly a good woman, so kind, so gentle, so devout, a friend to all and to every good cause. She trained her children up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. The result of such a life and such training is seen in the fact that every child the Lord gave her accepted the Lord as a personal savior in early life and adorns the profession with a Godly life.

Sister Boyd was an invalid for the last 19 years of her life but greater patience and resignation were perhaps never witnessed than were seen during these years of affliction and suffering. I also want to say that children never loved more nor served with more patience and gentleness than those of hers who were near her during her long illness. I am sure God will say to them, "Inasmuch as you did it unto the least of these my children you did it unto me."

The Bennett / Boyd Families

Elizabeth Bennett was born in Pike County, Georgia on 29 May 1824, daughter of Cooper Bennett and Mary Thornton Bennett. Cooper Bennett and his family removed and settled in the southern part of Choctaw County, Mississippi before 1840. The Bennett family made two brief stops in their migration to Mississippi. One in Troup County, Georgia and the other in Fayette County, Alabama. It was in Fayette County, Alabama that Elizabeth met her future husband, Cyrus Boyd.

In 1842, Cyrus Boyd followed the Bennett family to Choctaw County where he married Elizabeth Bennett. Cyrus and Elizabeth returned to Fayette County, Alabama following the marriage. However, in about 1849, they moved to Attala County, Mississippi, settling in the northern part of the county just south of French Camp. Sometime, between 1860 and 1870, they moved to a farm located about three miles west of present day McCool. There they lived out their lives. Cyrus and Elizabeth Boyd would have 14 children, 12 of whom are listed below:

Frances Ann Boyd b. 18 October 1843
Nancy J. Boyd b. about 1845
William B. Boyd b. about 1847
Robert Elijah Boyd b. 8 December 1848
Mary Elizabeth Boyd b. 16 December 1850
Levi Columbus Boyd b. 21 November 1852 (twin)
Cooper Lafayette Boyd b. 21 November 1852 (twin)
Benjamin F. Boyd b. July 1855
John D. Boyd b. 2 October 1858
Missouri Ann Boyd b. 4 April 1861
Cyrus D. Alonzo Boyd b. 1 March 1864
Elizabeth M. (Bettie) Boyd b. 2 August 1865

Two other children evidently were still born or died young. One may be the J. M. Boyd shown on the Boyd Cemetery survey.

Cyrus Boyd died on 24 December 1882 and Elizabeth Bennett Boyd died on 1 February 1911. Both are buried in a cemetery located on their land.

The photograph of Elizabeth was made in 1898.

The photograph of Elizabeth Bennett Boyd and information for the Bennett and Boyd families was submitted by David Blaine in March, 2006. Elizabeth Bennett Boyd is David's great great grandmother.

Mary Thornton was married (4 Sep 1823) to Cooper Bennett b 1802, d 14 Dec 1849, burial location unknow at this time.
