Born on Blackburn's Fork, Jackson County, Tennessee.

Married on the 4th of January 1849, Gainesboro, Tennessee, to Frances Almeda (Ritchie) Anderson.

Francis was mustered in the 3rd Regiment, Tennessee Infantry. Organized at Flat Lick, Ky., December, 1861, to February, 1862.

Duty at Somerset and at Camp Dick Robinson London, Ky. Enlisted as Sergeant.

Fought in the Battle of Mill Springs January 19,1862.

Cumberland Gap Campaign March 28-June 18, 1862.

Big Creek Gap June 11-12 and 15, 1862.

Occupation of Cumberland Gap and covering rear at London June 18-September 17, 1862.

Big Hill August 23. (Battle of White's Farm, Richmond, Ky., August 30, Battalion).

Expedition to Fine Mountain September 6-10.

Big Creek Gap September 7.

Evacuation of Cumberland Gap and retreat to Greenupsburg, Ky., September 17-October 3.

The Battle of Perryville, also known as the Battle of Chaplin Hills, was fought on October 8, 1862, in the Chaplin Hills west of Perryville, Kentucky.

Near Gallipolis, Ohio, and operations in the Kanawha Valley until November.

Ordered to Louisville, thence to Cincinnati, Ohio, and to Nashville, Tenn.

Duty at Nashville, Tenn., until April, 1863,

and at Carthage, Tenn., until August.

Ordered to McMinnville August 31.

March to Chattanooga September 12-20.

Action near Summerton September 23.

At Sale Creek until December.

Captain of Company "C" 1st Tennessee Mounted Infantry Regiment - Union. Mustered December 3, 1863, at Nashville with 20 men from 2nd, 60 men from 4th Congressional District. Along his side was his relative, 2nd Lt. Prettyman Jones.

Francis Anderson was active in a battalion of Tennessee troops under Major Garrett and was a part of the force which moved from Gallatin, TN, to Carthage, TN, to Flynn's Lick, Gainesboro, TN, and Livingston, TN, in an attempt to clear the country of Confederate marauders under Colonels 0. P. Hamilton and John M. Hughs.
