Birth: Aug. 10, 1823
Llanelli
Carmarthenshire, Wales
Death: Oct. 27, 1882
Council Bluffs
Pottawattamie County
Iowa, USA

Mary Elizabeth married John Charles Bassett, and lived as a young adult in the town of both their births, Llanelli, Wales. They had their first two children in Wales, which meant that the extreme discomfort of immigration was magnified by travelling with little ones.

Mary Elizabeth and John Charles had converted to Mormonism while in Wales. They joined the historic Welsh immigration to the United States. Through faith, severe hardship and determination, they survived crossing the Atlantic in order to push a handcart across America's Great Plains in order to reach Zion, Salt Lake City.

The family became disillusioned with their decision and moved back to what was then the edge of the West--Council Bluffs, Iowa. They joined a people who also left the Mormon church and organized themselves into The Reorganized Latter Day Saint church.
