O. Arthur (Art) Coffman, 90, a resident of Olympia for over half his life, passed away peacefully on August 31, 2011, at Panorama City in Lacey, Washington. He was born December 29, 1920 to Orville William Coffman and Nora Blanche Stenger in Pendleton, Oregon.

He and his twin brother, Al Coffman, graduated from Olympia High School in 1939 and joined the U.S. Navy in February, 1940. He served on the USS North Carolina, the USS Queenfish (SS393), the USS Entemedor T. Flag (CSD-46), the USS Macabi T. Flag (CSD-105) and the USS Fulton (AS-11). He was honorably discharged from active service after five years in the submarine service February, 1946 with the rank of Chief Pharmacist's Mate. He continued in the Navy Reserves until his final retirement in September, 1962.

Art married Elizabeth V. Keyser on February 14, 1953 and adopted her two daughters. After her death in 1993, he married Rosemary Beck on June 27, 1994.

In August, 1984, Art was nominated and received the "Olympia Favorite Neighbor" award. He was a reserve police officer for the City of Tumwater Police Reserve from 1979 to 1994. He helped with traffic control during special events or during emergencies and shared patrol duty with regular officers. For many years, he volunteered his time every Thursday in the pharmacy at Madigan Army Hospital.

Art retired from ITT Rayonier Research Lab in 1982 as a lab technician. He was chairman of the Safety Committee and handled first aid issues for the company. He held a vocational certificate entitling him to teach industrial safety and first aid and taught classes not only for ITT Rayonier, but also for many community organizations.

He was active in his community and was a lifetime member of the Olympia Elks, a member of the Shelton Moose, a board member of Crime Stoppers, a member of the Olympia Rotary, and a Red Cross Volunteer.

Art is survived by three daughters and a son; Ann Reed of Orlando, FL; Carol (Jim) Oakes of Tumwater, WA; Lynette (John) Droke; and Gary (Robin) Ewer of Hillsboro, OR; a sister-in-law, Sully Coffman of Coos Bay, OR; ten grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren.

Art was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many. He had a generous and giving heart. Art leaves a giant hole in the lives of countless good friends and loved ones, but he will live on forever in our hearts.

Special thanks to the caring staff at Panorama for the loving support they provided during Dad's final days.
