Daughter of John Tuggle and Alice Shorter, she tragically died of heart failure, at age 39, during the delivery of twin infants.
The father of the twins was her 2nd husband, James B Burgess, a miner, son of Allen Burgess and Kitty Shorter.
James and Laura also lost son James to Cholera, in August 1929; he was just eight months old. However, children Josie and Russell were born and survived.
Laura's first marriage was to (George) Matt Mays, a Railroad worker. Two of their young daughters were lost to chilhdood disorders, during this marriage; Ellen Mays died at 17 months, from complications of teething and 2-year old Nellie died from "croup".
Two sons born to this union, Dell and Fred Douglas did survive the hardships of childhood. They lived with their father until his untimely death in 1931, a year after the loss of their mother; Fred reached adulthood, married and fathered children . . . confirmed by his grand-daughter.
Laura was laid to rest in Patterson Cemetery in Heidrick, Knox County Kentucky, where son James, 8-months and twin daughters, Estelene and Evylene, 17 days, are also interred.
