MEMORIES OF MY MATERNAL GRANDMOTHER
Aszeline 'Gertrude' Goins was born to the marital union of Singleton Goins and Claudia Washington, in Goodwater, Clarke co., Mississippi. Her father died tragically when she was three years old. She was lovingly raised by her mother and her maternal grandparents, Deacon Mack Washington and Jane Crawford-Washington.
Her formative, educational, years where spent in Clarke co., MS. She eventually moved to Louisiana, to live with her mother who had remarried (Willie Jordan). Her middle school education was completed in Orleans Parish, New Orleans, LA. During this time, She met my grandfather, James Clarence Doyle, and married him in 1934. The young family settled on Clouet St., and grew to four members. My grandfather had made the decision that opportunities would be more readily available for his family in California. Subsequently, they migrated to Oakland in the early 1950s, and settled on Fremont St.
The fond memories that I have of my grandmother, centers around food! Actually, all of the women in my mother's family are incredible southern cooks. I recall Sunday visits to her home, and having the smell of freshly baked, southern style, pound cake fill the air. Also of having to patiently wait for the cake to sufficiently, cool, before she would slice a piece for me. I also remember her fondness of decorative dolls, placed (not to be played with!) on her beds. A tradition I have followed in my own home! :-))
My grandmother was a woman of her era, which meant, she was always immaculately dressed and her hair nicely coiffured. She expected no less from the women in her immediate family. Unfortunately, I did not always meet her standards; I was a little 'tomboy.' Who followed her older brother around tirelessly: playing in dirt, rough-housing and never having the ability to 'stay clean!' :-)) However, we knew that she loved us immeasurably.
My grandparents divorced in the early sixties and they both remarried wonderful people.
My grandmother died, while hospitalized after a long illness, surrounded by wonderful caregivers.
