Biochemist, received 1955 Nobel Prize in chemistry for isolation and synthesis of oxytocin and vasopressin hormones, helped to promote other major developments in biochemistry, including synthesis of penicillin and discovery of structure of vitamin biotin, during tenure as professor and chairman of biochemistry department at Cornell University Medical College in New York City (1938-1967), professor of chemistry at Cornell University in Ithaca (1967-1975), trustee emeritus of Rockefeller University, received Lasker Award (1948), among other honors.
