Dorothy Gaye Armstrong Baugh, 75, of Ellisville, died on May 20 ,2008 at her residence after a long courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held on May 25 at Mount Zion United Methodist Church in Ellisville with burial in the church cemetery. Reverend Bill Hayes and Dr. Ken Regan will officiate.
She was born in Lyman, Mississippi and graduated in 1951 from Jones County Agricultural High School in Ellisville. She was retired in 1997 from South Central Regional Medical Center after nearly 9 years in the Admissions office. Prior to working at SCRMC, she had worked in the garment industry as a seamstress for 30 years. Following her retirement, she worked for the United States Census Bureau on the 2000 Census. She served for 5 years with the Jones County Democratic Executive Committee. She was an avid gardener and a genealogist who had compiled a history of her family from the papers of her late mother and grandfather, Rev. W. W. Murray, as well as the research of her daughter, Janet and brothers Louis and John. She had worked most recently as a member of the Jones County Genealogical and Historical Organization's committee compiling the Jones County family history book, "Echos From Our Past." She was a member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church. She will also be remembered for her courage, determination and ever-present sense of humor during the difficult times of her life.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 33 years, Thomas Joseph Baugh and by her parents Walter Louis Armstrong, Sr, and Ina Laura Murray Armstrong, her brother, Walter Louis Armstrong, Jr., a sister, Flora Marie Armstrong and beloved daughter-in-law Dorothy Maldonado Baugh.
She is survived by her children and their spouses: Dr. Janet Baugh Croft and her husband Steven of Stone Mountain, Georgia, Dr. Joseph Bennett Baugh of Benson, Arizona, John Dewey Baugh and his wife Michele of Ellisville, Ellen Baugh Bigbie and her husband, Joseph of Laurel, and Tom Baugh and his wife Audrey of Cumming, Georgia. She is also survived by her eighteen grandchildren and their spouses: Laura Croft , William (Carla) Baugh, Joseph B.(Heather) Baugh, Jr., Sara Baugh (Kyle) Harris, Vanessa Baugh(Alan) Emanuel, Jamie (Mary) Baugh, Jesse (Brittany) Baugh, Jason Baugh, Matthew Baugh, Arielle Baugh, Tiffany Baugh, Noah Baugh, Jonathan Bigbie, Krysta Bigbie (Chris) McRae, Bethany Bigbie (Brandon) Gilbert, Michael Bigbie, Morgan Baugh and Jessica Baugh and by her five great-grandchildren: Ashleigh Emanuel, Matthew Emanuel, Cecilia Emanuel,Aidan Bigbie and Melody Gilbert. She is also survived by her sister, Rebecca Armstrong Jefcoats of Soso and her brothers, James (Jeanette) Armstrong of Ellisville and John (Mitsuko) Armstrong of San Diego and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by numerous cousins in the Fayard and Armstrong families on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Memorials may be made to the Dorothy Gaye Armstrong Baugh Memorial Scholarship at Jones County Junior College or to the Domestic Abuse Family Shelter in Laurel.
