Walter Louis Armstrong Jr., 74, of Pensacola, Fla., died Friday, May 14, 2004 in Pensacola.

Mr. Armstrong was born June 13, 1929 in Harrison County to Walter Louis and Ina Laura (Murray) Armstrong, Sr. He was a 1947 graduate of Woolmarket High School in Biloxi. Mr. Armstrong was a member of Coalville Methodist Church and many Masonic organizations including Poplar Star Masonic Lodge # 154 in Gulfport. He retired as BMCS after 30 years in the Navy. Chief Armstrong's duty stations included Trindad, British West Indies, Key West, Fla., Bethesda, Md., Newport, R.I., Pt. Mugu, Calif. and Pensacola, Fla., as well as the USS Missouri, USS Albany, USS Rainer, USS Monticello, USS Joseph K. Taussig and the USS Kitty Hawk. He was a part time driver for Avis for the past 15 years. His hobbies were genealogy and Civil War History and had visited many Civil War Battlefields. He was well read in this history.

Mr. Armstrong was preceded in death by his wife, Claire Henderson Armstrong in 1978, his parents, and a sister, Flora Marie Armstrong .

Survivors include his son, John Paul Armstrong, and grandson, Jonathan Armstrong; two brothers, John Armstrong and James D. Armstrong; two sisters, Dorothy Gaye Baugh and [Laura] Rebecca Jefcoats ; as well as a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. He is also survived by a special friend, Sheri Gammel.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, May 18, 2004 at Oak Lawn Funeral Home with Reverend Janet Lee officiating.

Burial will be in Barrancas National Cemetery at NAS Pensacola. OAK LAWN FUNERAL HOME, 619 New Warrington Road Pensacola, Florida, is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be Monday from 5 to 7 p.m., at the funeral home.
