Jewell P. Denney, 86 of Helena, MS passed away August 24, 2013 surrounded by his family. Mr. Denney was born on October 23, 1926 in Summit, MS.
He was a veteran of WWII serving proudly in the United States Army with the 1st Infantry Division "Big Red 1". He fought bravely in Germany and other countries the European Theater. He was a member of the American Legion Post #160 of Pascagoula, MS and the Moss Point Moose Lodge. Mr. Denney enjoyed announcing horse shows from the late 1950s through the mid 1970s in Jackson, George, Harrison, Mobile, Baldwin counties and northern Florida.
He worked as a deputy for the Jackson County Sheriff's Department for Sheriff James Ira Grimsley in 1956. He also was a deputy from 2001 until August 2013. He was a county constable for District One.
Mr. Denney started working in the construction field in the 1970's and retired from the Brown and Root Construction Company in 1993.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Genevieve Denney, children Sandra, Kenneth, and Twila, great grandchild Baby Pipkins, his parents Mr. Russell and Mrs. Valley Wilkerson Denney and brothers, Roy, Jerry, Lee (Red) and Troy Denney.
Mr. Denney leaves cherished memories to his sons Philip (Peggy) Denney of Orange Grove, and Lance (Candice) Clark of Helena. He will also be dearly missed by his grandchildren Jeremy Denney, Christy (Kyle) Pipkins, Aryn Clark, Allison Clark, Jacob Clark, and Ricky Cooley, one great grandchild Rylee Grace Cooley, two sisters, Elizabeth (Pete) and Virgil Hutcherson of Mocksville, NC and Leona Barnado of Summit, MS, brother-in-law, Truman and Charlotte Clark of Brandon MS and nephew, Rudy Clark of Brandon, MS. He is also survived by numerous other family and friends.
Visitation for Jewell Denney will be Monday, August 26, 2013 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Heritage Funeral Home in Escatawpa, MS. The funeral service will begin at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, August 27, 2013 from the chapel of Heritage Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time. Bro. Wendell Stork and Rev. Virgil Hutcherson will be officiating. Burial to follow in Machpelah cemetery in Pascagoula, MS with full honors being provided by the Jackson County Sheriff's Department. Jackson County Sheriff Deputies will serve as pallbearers.
