Jeffrey Lee Barnes, 23 year-old senior at Tennessee Wesleyan College and resident of Copperhill, Tennessee went to be with his Lord on Saturday, February 25, 2006. Jeff, who was born April 27, 1982, the son of Dennis and Vivian Barnes of Copperhill and was preceded in death by Robert Barnes, his paternal grandfather, who was a very special person to Jeff.
Besides his parents, Jeff is survived by his sister Stacy Barnes of Copperhill and his niece Haylee Barnes (Jeff's pride and joy); paternal grandmother, Billie Jean Barnes of Copperhill; maternal grandparents, Hoyt and Eleanor Verner of McCaysville; Uncle James and Aunt Diane Barnes; Uncle Raymond and Aunt Kay Verner; Uncle Buck and Aunt Janice Cook; Uncle Carl and Aunt Sharon Arp; and many other relatives and friends.
Jeff was a member of Mt. Zion (Tumbling Creek) Baptist Church and was also a 2000 graduate of Copper Basin High School. After graduation, Jeff attended Hiawassee College in Madisonville, TN where he served as president of the Hiawassee College Student Government Association in 2002. He was currently enrolled in Tennessee Wesleyan College and was scheduled to graduate in May 2006 with a degree in Behavioral Sciences/Criminal Justice Emphasis. Jeff was well known on the Tennessee Wesleyan campus and served as its Student Government President during the 2004 academic year as well as serving on various committees on the Student Government Association. He was active in various associations on the TWC campus including: Baptist Collegiate Ministry; Fellowship of Christian Athletes; Psychology Club; Lambda Alpha Epsilon, National Criminal Justice Society; he was selected to the Homecoming court of TWC for Fall 2004 and Fall 2005 respectively. His column "El Jeffe Hablar" was a regular contribution to the school newspaper "The New Exponent." His smiling face and outgoing personality will be missed by students, staff and faculty at the college.
In recent weeks he had been hired to be ring master for the Adrenaline Rush Wrestling company. His banter was a welcome addition to the wrestling competition. He also recently formed a motivational and speaking group with his good friend Bo Edwards.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, March 1, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. from the Mt. Zion (Tumbling Creek) Baptist Church with Rev. Gerald Payne and Rev. Lloyd Deal officiating. Music will be the Deal Family and Kenny O'Neal. Pallbearers will be Jamie Barnes, Josh Shinpaugh, Torrey Lester, Matt Locklear, Shane Kirkland, and David Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be David Barnes, B.J. Chancey, Nathan Chancey, Tim McArthur, Joe Loudermilk, Clint Davidson, Brooks Gray, Derek Pirtle, Ryan Ferrell, Chris Black, Rachel Cornett, Mary McCall, Ryan Phelps, Zack Davis, Perry Philphott, Dean Scott Mashburn, Dr. Dick Pelley, Larry Wallace, Ferris Maloof, David Scott, Brett Baudet and the Eagle Ranch Staff, and special lifelong friends Sara O'Neal and Steven Gaddis. Interment will follow in Grassy Creek Cemetery.
