Eleanor was the only child of Robert and Ellen Kempland Friend. She grew up in St. Louis, MO and San Diego, CA. Her B.A. and M.A. degrees in anthropology and journalism were from USC in Los Angeles and for a time she was employed by the Southwest Museum in Los Angeles and the U.S. Indian Service at Fort Defiance, AZ. After her marriage to Frederick Sleight she moved to Florida where she remained until her death. For a time she was director of The Central Florida Museum in Orlando.
