James Stephen DeMoss was a farmer, as were his ancestors before him. He met Rose Ella White at a dance and they were married shortly after. They had eleven children before moving their family to California in 1937. Their twelfth and last child was born the following year in Santa Cruz. James worked a farm in the San Andreas area of Watsonville where he sustained fatal injuries when a team of horses hitched to a planter bolted, throwing him to the ground. He left his wife and seven children still at home, including the infant girl born only months prior.
