Prominent Resident of Schoolcraft Village Passes Away.

SCHOOLCRAFT, Mich., Oct. 6.—Mrs. E. L. Brown, one of the oldest and most beloved residents of this village, passed away peacefully at 1 o'clock on the morning of October 5. Mrs. Brown has been in falling health for the past nine months, but was able to be on the street and about the house until recently. Mary Ann Miles was born on January 14. 1822, at Hinesburg, Vermont. She was one of five children and is survived by two brothers. The younger one has a home in Chicago, and the other one, Dr. Fay Miles, of Hinesburgh, Vermont, is 86 years old, two years older than Mrs. Brown. Two younger sisters died some years ago. Mary A. Miles first came to Schoolcraft in 1850 to teach school and remained here one year. In October of 1852 she was married in Hinesburgh, Vermont, to E. Lakin Brown of Schoolcraft, who had been identified with the then new west for a number of years. In 1840 he was a representative at the old state house in Detroit. Mr. Brown had lost his first wife, and in the home to which he brought his new bride was a young daughter, A. Ada Brown, who has ever remained a faithful daughter to her new mother and was the only child with her at the time of her death. Three sons were born to Mary A. and E. Lakin Brown. Edward N., who is a professor of English In the Cincinnati. Ohio, university; George L., who died on October 12, 1860, at the age of four and one-half years, of diphtheria, and Addison M., who is secretary of the Michigan Agricultural college.
