Alice Riedlinger Essig descended from pioneers who came early to homestead in Sheridan County and Emmons County, North Dakota. Her ancestors had farmed in the German villages of the Glueckstal and Liebental districts of the Black Sea and continued that life on the Northern Plains. She was one of the original founders of the Germans from Russia Heritage Society. The Walter and Alice Riedlinger Essig Collection has been established at the Germans from Russia Heritage Collection, NDSU Libraries, Fargo. Many of her early obituaries have the pedigree of the deceased in the margin, thanks to Alice. From a noter by Margaret Freeman of California: "Alice and Walt were a great team all of their married life of some 60 years. When on the farm, Alice would grease the combine while Walt had a meal so that he could continue his work. When they moved to Bismarck, Walt supported Alice while she worked at the fledging Germans from Russia Heritage Society office. It was Alice who copied the first Declarations of Intent that the Glueckstal Colonies Research Association (www.glueckstal.org) published, that of McIntosh County, ND."
