Jean Dorothea was the second born child of James Edward MacKesson and his wife Myrtle Davis MacKesson. She was raised in Lebanon, Missouri. Following the death of Mrs. Myrtle MacKesson, James Edward married Miss Virginia Farrar, of the Samuel Farrar family of Lebanon, Missouri. Virginia became the new mother for Jean. James Edward was Prosecuting Attorney for Laclede County and the MacKessons owned the local newspaper in the Lebanon community. Jean Dorothea was a very active student in high school, including being Captain of the Girls Basketball team. She attended college and worked as a writer, researcher, and as a nurse.
