Linda McKesson was the daughter of William (from McKesson family of Pasadena) and Mary (maiden name Garnett, from Canada. Linda was one of two children in this family. She had one brother named Doug. The McKesson family lived in Montrose, California. They owned and operated a restaurant there that was known for their "great pies". In addition to running the restaurant, Linda's father worked for the Pacific Telephone Corporation and her mother was a high school teacher.
Linda was a graduate of the University of California at Berkley. Following graduation, Linda went to work for the university in the department of industrial relations. She married a man named Stephen Thorne, III, who was dentist. They relocated to southern California. There they raised their four children: Steven, Michael and Jon Thorne, and Patrick Huston.
Linda married a second time, becoming the wife of Mr. James Collister, a successful management consultant, leader in industrial team building, and author. (James is the author of the book, "The Last Relationship Book You'll Ever Need".)James Collister and Linda shared a marriage throughout the rest of Linda's life.
Linda loved the ocean and enjoyed sailing. She made frequent trips to the chanel island of Santa Catalina. She became a skilled seaman and achieved licensure as a Ship's Captain through the United States Coast Guard.
Linda was passionate in her love of nature and animal life. She was an ecologist and author, sharing her knowledge and pursuits through her regularly published articles for the newspaper The Orange County Register as well as those that appeared in nature magazines. Linda was recognized for her work on a publication that achieved acclaim titled, "Dolphin Law." A part of Linda's legacy is the Linda Collister Scholarship awarded to promote excellence in women who are doing post-doctoral work in the study of dolphins or whales. This research work supports Linda's areas of academic interest and love of the ocean.
Linda's familial survivors include her husband, James Collister, her daughters: Laura Dobson and Laura Collister, her sons: Steve Mike and Jon Thorne, and Patrick Huston, her brother Doug McKesson, and five grandchildren. She is remembered with love and admiration by family, friends, and colleagues.
Hulopoe Bay, Lanai, a place that was especially loved is the final resting place for Linda's remains. She was creamted and her ashes have been dispersed into the water in that area. Dolphins and turtles are also present at that site.
