Mr. Cogdill was born in Bakersville, N.C., and was a son of the late Walter and Hazel Carver Cogdill.
He was raised in Greene County with the family living a number of years in Reisterstown, Md., and returning to Greene County, in the Mount Carmel community of Mosheim.
Mr. Cogdill was a retired chief petty officer of the U.S. Navy stationed on the aircraft carrier U.S. Saratoga.
After a lengthy career with the Navy, he joined the U.S. Civil Service where he was involved with the task of rebuilding the FA18 Hornet, P3 Reconnaissance, and A6 fighter jets.
The family states, "He will be missed by all who knew him. He was known for his great integrity, generosity, and love for family and friends".
Survivors include his wife: Nancy Cogdill of Middlesburg; one daughter: Nancy Cogdill, and two sons: Keith Cogdill and Johnny Cogdill, all of Middlesburg; two grandsons and one granddaughter, all of Florida; a sister and brother-in-law: JoLeen and J.C. Jones of Greeneville; two nephews: Wade Yelle of Greeneville and Leo Yelle of St. Augustine, Fla.; and one great-niece: Casey Colyer of Greeneville.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Betty Codgill Yelle, and one brother, Joe Cogdill.
A memorial service will be held at 4 o'clock Saturday afternoon at Brown Springs Baptist Church in Mosheim. The Rev. Richard Long will officiate.
Interment will follow in Brown Springs Cemetery. Veterans of Foreign Wars, Andrew Johnson Post No. 1990, will conduct a military graveside service.
