|Birth: ||Jan. 2, 1920|
|Death: ||Apr. 24, 2008|
Evelyn Lucille LaFurge Schwend passed away peacefully Thursday, April 24, 2008, at the Marcus Daly Memorial Hospice and Palliative Care Center in Hamilton.
Mother was born in Sumatra, Jan. 2, 1920, the youngest child of Bill and Edna Cramott LaFurge.
When she was 5, her family moved to Fromberg, where she attended elementary school. The family then moved to Joliet, where she attended junior and senior high school. After high school, Mom moved to Great Falls where she lived with her sister, Virginia, and worked in the smelter. She moved to Bridger, where she met Bill Schwend. They were married in 1946.
Dad and Mom lived in Bridger for seven years, then moved to Melstone where they lived for 27 years. Mom loved to hunt the countryside for old bottles and rocks. She created a beautiful rock garden in the backyard using those rocks. Dad moved an old building in and built shelves to display her more than 1,500 old bottles.
In 1972, Dad had a heart attack and was unable to continue working in the oil fields. Rather than lose their business, Mom kept it going all winter and part of the summer. In 1974, they sold the business and moved to Laurel where they bought the Welcome Travelers Motel. A year later, they moved to Lander, Wyo., where Mom worked in the Maverick Motel office that belonged to their son, Gerry, and a nephew, LeRoy LaFurge. After several years, they moved to Buffalo, Wyo., and managed the Horseman's Inn before returning to Bridger where Dad died in 1988.
In 1996, Mom moved to Laurel for a few years before settling in Hamilton, where her son Steve and his family reside.
Preceding her in death were her parents; four brothers, Archie, Russell, Glen and Vern; two sisters, Virginia and Hazel; and her son, Gerry.
She is survived by Gerry's wife Barbara of Kent, Wash.; Bob and Nancy Schwend of Boise, Idaho; and Steve and Verna Schwend of Hamilton; 10 grandchildren, LaDawna, Karma, Kelli, Dustin, Karen, Chad, Michelle, Jason, Ryan and Janelle; three step-grandchildren, Charlene, Lori and Bob; numerous great-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren.
Very special people who have helped Mom when she needed it most are Mike and Kelli Storlie, Eldon and Bethene Vermandel, Glen and Debbie LaFurge, LeRoy and Bea LaFurge, Kathy and Gary Gehring, Chris Jessop, Dr. Randy Stewart and the Marcus Daly Hospice Staff.
There will be a graveside service in Bridger and a celebration of Dad's and Mom's lives in Billings early this summer to which all are invited.
