CIVIL WAR VETERAN
Illinois Company H,
100th Infantry Regiment
Henry J King
___Born April, 1842 at Marshall, Illinois. Son of Ebenezer King and Sarah (Pease) King. Henry was born on the family farm. He was the 6th of 14 children.
Henry served in the Union Army, during the Civil War, along with 3 of his brothers.
After his service in the Civil War, his first wife Mary passed away, possibly in childbirth. Mary's passing left Henry a widower, with 2 daughters to raise alone, Nancy b. 1871 and Sarah "Sadie" b. 1872. Henry's younger sister America came to live on his farm, after Mary died. America helped raise the girls and looked after Henry until he remarried. It was not unusual in those days for a single aunt, or sister to move to the widower's home, to care for the children.
Henry J. King wed the former Mary A. Riel in 1880, in Princeville, Illinois.
October 15, 1885, Mary & Henry were blessed with the birth of their only living child, Rose.
Henry loved horses. He was a farmer by trade and also raised a large stock of beautiful horses. Daughter Rose learned to ride as a small child. Rose loved horses all of her life. As a child, Rose thought the horses were her pets. Even as an elderly lady, she spoke of the joy she had growing up on her parent's farm and riding her favorite horses.
In 1919, daughter Rose married Hudson Gresham. Rose and her husband moved Mary & Henry to Denver, Colorado. Hudson built 2 matching houses, side by side. One for Mary & Henry and one for he and Rose.
Mary & Henry lived out the rest of their lives in Denver, next door to their daughter Rose and son-in-law Hudson Gresham. Henry passed away at 83 years of age.
Henry is my maternal Great-Grandfather.
